Arabella Walker, a Wulli Wulli woman originally from the Gold Coast and raised in Meanjin (Brisbane), has cultivated a deep passion for the arts since her early years immersed in dance.

Her journey took her from competitive dance studios to earning a Certificate III with RAW Dance Company and eventually a Bachelor’s degree from QUT. However, the onset of COVID-19 prompted a shift in focus as dance classes moved online, leading Arabella to explore her other love: drawing and painting.

Amidst the challenges of the pandemic, Arabella pursued a Bachelor of Contemporary Australian Indigenous Art (CAIA) at Griffith University, delving into her family history and the creation of art with profound meaning. Immersed in the Brisbane art scene, she actively participated in exhibitions and festivals, forging valuable connections along the way.

“Teachers and mentors were artists themselves and were heavily involved in the art scene, which is where my connections began.”

Arabella’s multidisciplinary approach to art merges her Indigenous heritage with contemporary expression, evident in projects like her participation in Aboriginal Art Co (AAC) artist residencies and her current showcase, “Matriarchs,” at Metro Arts alongside her sister. After graduating with a degree in Contemporary Australian Indigenous Art, Arabella continues to explore new avenues, from murals at Southbank train station to billboards in Edison Lane.

“University is just one way of growing your contacts, having a social media platform is also important for audience reach and another pathway aside from studying. Simply showing up to events, meeting people and having a yarn is a great way to get your name out there.”

Financial wellness for Arabella is not just about making art, but also about strategically navigating the art world. She emphasises the importance of diversifying income streams, leveraging social media presence, and actively engaging in exhibitions and artist talks. Through persistence and a clear understanding of her niche, Arabella exemplifies how financial stability can be achieved while staying true to one’s artistic vision.
