Larisha Jerome, a proud Jarowair, Wakka Wakka, and Wulli Wulli woman from Southeast Queensland, is the driving force behind the one-of-a-kind podcast Rich Blak Women (RBW). In this unique season, she steps into the hot seat to share insights on her personal journey, challenges, and successes.
With extensive experience in banking, health, coaching, and government, she specialises in women’s health and financial abuse prevention. Currently, as First Nations Foundation’s (FNF) Manager of Women’s Economic Empowerment and Business Education, Larisha fights to redress the economic injustice faced by Indigenous women, empowering them towards financial independence. She also coaches on self-concept and mindset motivation. Her career highlights include leading the Rich Blak Women initiative and hosting its podcast, fostering long-term financial prosperity for Indigenous Australian women and their communities.
Season 3 is hosted by Destiny Dewis, a proud Nywaigi and Manbarra woman from North Queensland and Boigu Island in the Torres Strait. Destiny is a renowned advocate for Indigenous communities across Australia. She is also a leading figure in promoting growth, education, and financial literacy within her communities. Together, Jerome and Dewis get personal, exploring the themes of authenticity, self-worth, and financial empowerment.
“It’s not about monetary wealth; it’s about being rich in culture, mindset and spirit,” Jerome said. “This season, Destiny and I share our personal journeys, underscoring the idea that one must be mentally rich before becoming spiritually rich.”
The creation of Rich Blak Women stemmed from Jerome’s desire to chronicle her personal journey and highlight the experiences of others. Previous seasons focused on the stories of various guests, but Season 3 marks a shift. This time, the spotlight turns inward, with Jerome sharing her own narrative.
“Rich Blak Women has always been about transparency and authenticity,” she says.
For someone accustomed to steering conversations, being interviewed presented a new set of challenges.
“Being in the hot seat felt vulnerable but necessary,” Jerome admits. “It was important for me to speak my truth, aligning with the values of RBW—to be authentic, merge our experiences and act with purpose.”
Jerome emphasises the power of education, regardless of age. She draws inspiration from a diverse list of mentors and role models, including Dewis and her close circle.
“Learning from those who lead authentic, humble lives—people who are Blak and strong—is invaluable.”
Jerome also finds motivation in the girls and women participating in the RBW program, who continually inspire her with their resilience and strength. Drawing from her own history, Jerome offers advice to younger First Nations women aspiring to create their own financial wealth amidst struggles.
“Your self-worth is your net worth,” she asserts. “It’s crucial to recognise the importance of self-worth in all aspects of life. Being mentally rich lays the foundation for spiritual richness.”
Jerome also stresses the significance of personal accountability.
“Just showing up is a powerful act of accountability. It’s about being present and taking responsibility for your journey.”
Destiny Dewis’s role as the host for this season cannot be overstated. Her commitment to empowering Indigenous communities and fostering financial literacy adds depth to the conversations. Together, Dewis and Jerome create a dynamic platform that not only shares stories, but also imparts wisdom and strength to listeners.
Season 3 of Rich Blak Women promises to be a transformative experience, both for the audience and for Jerome herself. Through discussions and shared journeys, Jerome and Dewis pave the path to authenticity, self-worth, and financial empowerment. As the podcast continues to evolve, it remains a beacon of truth and inspiration for First Nations women and f.
