As we kicked off Financial Wellness Week in Townsville, we had the pleasure of sitting down with Eddie Buli, Project Manager at First Nations Foundation. Eddie shared insights on the profound impact this initiative has on the community.
What are we doing this week in Townsville and Palm Island for Financial Wellness Week?
This week, we’re bringing together various stakeholders and partners, including different superannuation funds, the ATO, legal representatives and other government services. By inviting both government and non-government organisations, we are creating a one-stop shop for the community. This allows individuals to address their concerns face-to-face, providing an invaluable opportunity to receive assistance in person.Â
Why is this important?
From an Indigenous perspective, we prefer the face-to-face. Our culture is based on passing knowledge on through song, music, dance and oral history. For many, it’s important to speak to someone in person, to tell their story once without having to navigate through call centres and repeat the same information multiple times. This approach allows issues to be addressed immediately, without the delays of weeks or months.Â
What impact could an initiative like this have on First Nations communities?
The impact is the opportunity it creates. It provides a chance to meet with the right people on the spot, address long-standing issues and gain new knowledge all in one day. This can be life-changing, easing burdens and offering support that benefits individuals, their families, and the wider community.
