School holiday hacks: Fun activities that won’t break the bank

Money Lessons
Depending on where you live, you’re likely to either be in the thick of school holidays or they’re about to begin.
If you’ve got kids in your network – as a parent, a relative or a babysitter/nanny looking for extra cash – the extended break can create pressure to come up with new entertainment ideas. These tips may help.
Take a nature walk
A walk in nature can combine the best of many worlds: It’s either free or inexpensive, it brings the wellbeing benefits of being outdoors and it’s an opportunity to tell stories. Consider exploring either the neighbourhood or go a little further afield to discover the National Park gems of your area.
Cook meals together
Preparing food is a great bonding activity. While the prices at the checkout are on the high side at the moment, think about looking at the weekly specials or seasonal foods and coming up with a recipe you can prepare and cook with the little ones.
Create art or check out galleries
If you’re keen for some more exploring, think about looking at your local galleries. If the kids are inspired, they could create their own pieces at home.
Have a home movie marathon
Consider picking out a favourite trilogy and hosting a home movie marathon. If you already subscribe to the streaming platform, it’s a free way to spend quite a few hours. All you need is the snacks.
Do some gardening
Gardening is another way to spend time outdoors that can also have learning and cost-of-living benefits. You can build your own herb or veggie patch and reap the rewards in the kitchen. If you don’t have space for a garden at home, think about looking into community gardens, where a group of different people chip in to help.
